" Why do we go away ? "

A bright campervan morning this morning. The sun is up and clear of the trees. A sky of two halves, the first bright blue with scattered cumulus clouds, the other hazy and a wee bit murky. No sign of a breeze. The main road is busy with the start of the working week. The night punctuated by passing trains, but distant enough not to disturb. Parked close to the ancient ramparts of Camp D’Atilla this campervan morning. The enormous earth ramparts to my left date back to the first century and were built by an ancient Gaulish tribe, fanciful legend has it, that it was the encampment of Atilla the Hun, prior to the battle of the Catalaunian Plains ( I am forever an historian ). The steep earthen ramparts are enormous and cover some 5km in a circle and over 60 ft high in places. We are also bordering a working farm which is busy with morning chores, the sounds of machinery and chatter on the air. Yesterday a six hour drive to just south of Rheims and today the last full day on the continent as we head further north, day 66 of the holiday and day 34 on mainland Europe. We seem to be heading in the right direction as streams of cars, caravans, campervans and motorhomes headed south, we had the roads pretty much to ourselves. A lovely way to wake up this morning, in a field, with coffee and breakfast, watching the world go by, better put by Stewart Stafford.

“ Breakfast, when the night's secrets go unspoken and the day's plans echo the cock's crow.”

Not a huge amount to report other than a peaceful night and a sense of looking forward to getting home, well at least for a short while before the travel itch starts again and plans are hatched for further adventures. The rest of the year and next already taking shape. A particular task for today, which has been long in the planning to bring this break to a close, more of which I shall share in tomorrows check in. Lovely days people.

“ Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.” Terry Pratchett.
