Tame The World.

Well it’s raining… again this campervan morning. Dark with a hint of haze, brought on by the rain, which seems again to go through cycles of heavy then easing and then back again. The oak providing much needed protection. The sound is purely the rain falling on grass, leaf, bough and branch. Water running off through gutters and drains. Occasional motor cars once more slushing through pools of water. Too dark yet to see how the day will develop, the rain suggests the cloud cover is heavy. It’s actually somewhat difficult to gauge the rain, the volume of its falling on the oak suggests it’s heavy, but that just maybe the build up of residue. The coffee steams and breath on air. I realised sitting here that this is the forth consecutive autumn that I have sat, in the early morning, under the oak and journaled in this way. As I sit the rain appears to slowly fade away revealing birdsong of sorts. The air changes to the perfume of damp grass and soil. I love this part of the year, the darkness yet to reveal the day, the keenness of other senses tested before sunrise. They talk of the nights drawing in, I love the power of the darker mornings. Just like that the coffee is finished and I am not even half way through writing this morning. The rain has stopped and the soundscape has shifted to the sounds of robins, crows, passing gulls and aeroplanes. It feels like the temperature has dropped as well. I came across an old journal and an old quote from Iris Murdoch ;

“ We defend ourselves with descriptions and tame the world by generalizing.”

The world today appears to be littered with generalisations. They appear to be the way the world is parcelled up and made consumable for the public. Banal generalities about people, nations, politics, tribes, religions and regions. Parcelled up, inflated and sent out into the media to brainwash a waiting public. Usually to feed a purpose or cause of which we know little. I like to think I am a person of descriptions. A person of curiosity and exploration. Someone who seeks out understanding, refuses the generalities and looks for the heart beat beyond the story. I think if we were all just a little more curious for the descriptive our level of understanding would be so much greater. We would be so much more difficult to coral and manipulate. So here’s to less generalisations and more curiosity and descriptions. Lovely days people.

“ Every spark returns to darkness. Every sound returns to silence. And every flower returns to sleep with the earth. The journey of the sun and moon is predictable. But yours, is your ultimate ART.”
