Photographs.

Sun yet to rise this campervan morning, hints of colour is all I have to go on, the familiarity of shapes and the sounds of birds. Dull colours await the freshness of sunlight. Robins once more fill the morning with music and conversation, we have a lot of them this morning. No sign of the big guys as yet, but as if on cue, three crows swoop into the Ash in a flurry of feathers and noise. A fresh, but mild morning, suggestions of a wee chill on fingers and face, heralds the last day of September. The coming light brings the grey sky into focus and slowly the darkness makes way. Shades of pink and orange in the early morning sky, create orange encrusted cirrus cloud, not seen that for a while. The light turns from darkness, to grey, to shades of orange and then to morning. Contemplating the day ahead and things to sort before departing on travels in a few days. I have been working my way through the six essays contained within Susan Sontag’s ‘ On Photography ‘ to kick start my creative side. A book I would recommend if you’re into this art form. She writes ;

“ The painter constructs, the photographer discloses “.

A short sentence that really struck me. She talks of the fact that no person takes the same picture of the same thing and continues about ‘Photgraphic seeing ‘. That photographs are not just of what is there, they are of what the photographer sees. The knowledge that the camera passes on from generation to generation, pictures of places, people and family members long gone. We now carry a camera in our pocket, produced in a flash, picture taken and shared around the world in seconds. No need for film or the smell of developing. A bit of a ramble this morning. Though I sense a shift from observer to participant once more, as the participant side of me is nourished. Lovely days people.

“ All photographs are memento mori. To take a photograph is to participate in another person's (or thing's ) mortality, vulnerability, mutability.” Susan Sontag.
