'Inside our Autistic Minds'

Breezy and whippy this campervan morning. Heavy grey and white cloud crawls across the sky. It feels a bit indeterminate. The sky and light is grey, but a sense that the weather is not sure which way to go. The gusts accentuate the chill on face and fingers, remaining autumnal debris blown around once more, a strange kind of Friday feeling. The last vestiges of winter holding on with spring knocking at the door, if we could call that a winter. The usual humdrum noise of man. Half a dozen starlings in the top of the oak, crow cries in the distance, sparrows chatter and the occasional glimpse of a Robin.

A campervan morning of two parts. The above written before errands needed to be ran. I have spent some days reflecting on a programme, which I implore you to watch. The programme is available here in the UK on iplayer and is led by Chris Packham and titled ‘Inside our Autistic Minds ‘. Having raised an ND son, so much of it resonated with me as a person, father, working in the area as a facilitator and being part of humanity where these exceptional people live. My own journey of understanding has been a bumpy one and I didn’t understand or get it for the first few years. He has been buffeted over 30 years by an education system that does not get it, work arena that does not get it and a society bordering on frightened and hostile. It has been an emotional rollercoaster for him and is on a minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day basis. He is a master at masking, but often comments that his brain is on fire at times. So if you want an understanding of his and others world then take a look. If like me you work a lot with these beautiful people then it is a MUST watch to get a peek into what it is like. There is so much to write, but time is against me. Lovely days people.

“ You have to be the bravest person in the world to go out every day, being yourself when no one likes who you are.” Matthew Dicks.
