Woken early by the sound of two Owls this campervan morning. Stepped outside into a chill, damp early morning light. A sky of two halves, the first clear with the North Star shining bright, the second cloudy and obscured. A singing Robin in the Oak answered from what appears to be all directions. Crow cries in the distance and the usual cockerel. Rumbles from planes overhead the flicker of navigation and strobe lights announcing their r progress as they pass over. It’s chilly this morning, thick hoodie required for the first time, metal cold and damp to the touch as a light dew makes itself known. The darkness being slowly chased away by a rising sun, contrails being illuminated by a pink tinge, as is the sky to the east of me, over my shoulder pinks and oranges begin to unfold. As I sit here a wee early morning mist descends and swirls in the tops of the trees. Slowly becoming more dense and obscuring the view and the temperature as noticeably dropped. The start of another Friyay. A frantically early start yesterday and a 145 teenagers to drum with and talk about the future, communication, listening and being outside their comfort zone. Still feeling the effects this morning. I came across some words of wisdom from the great satirical writer Kurt Vonnegut yesterday :
“ We are all here to help each other go through this thing, whatever it is.”
This thing, whatever it is ? The ups and the vicissitudes of the here and now, this thing perhaps called life. It’s what we are here for to help each other. We are a gregarious people, who thrive in company, work together, we are a society despite the horrendous efforts since the 80’s to destroy it. It’s why I believe in community and community building, helping others and being there for people. The effort to undo and repair years of injustice. Kelley Harrell writes that ;
“ We don't heal in isolation, but in community.”
Social capital, social trust, social exchange, reciprocity the back none of human exchange. Robert Putnam writes ;
“ Community connectedness is not just about warm fuzzy tales of civic triumph. In measurable and well documented ways, social capital makes an enormous difference in our lives “
As Vonnegut said help each other. Lovely days people .
“ You gotta learn to drop your foolish pride,
You gotta learn to know these things they’re dust,
You gotta learn that misdeeds only rust,
You gotta learn the chains can open up (these genes survive),
And environment can fuck you up (the eyes),
You gotta learn that drugs don’t really work (more music),
Unless you know the ones that hurt,
Oh babe let’s do it again (please baby),
I wanna put the record on and live it again (live it again),
I wanna rewind the tape, turn off the clocks,
This is life now, undo my locks”. Richard Ashcroft.
