A strangely warm campervan morning, still as still can be. The usual interruptions of passing aeroplanes, but also the sounds of the usual birds plus magpies, ducks, a few geese and the far off morning greeting of a cockerel. A crow makes themselves known. Nature is busy in the early morning gloom. The sky appears solid and white, not the whiff of any form of breeze and it’s warmer than it has been. Spring on its way. Though winter never really got here, well I tasted its arrival in the north, but it didn’t really arrive in suburban here. The trees are quiet and I await my starling guests. Reflecting on conversations this morning. The power of conversations to persuade, change points of view, to give feedback, to enforce a point of view, to be open to a conversation. The wonderful Nick Cave talks of the power of conversation to change perspectives ( I would by the way, thoroughly recommend his brilliant book Faith, Hope and Carnage, a deep, thoughtful and fabulous read ). The creation of a connection and friendship through conversation. Every friendship and relationship I have, started with a simple conversation and for some of them 40 years later we are still talking. I love conversation, I love talking to people, the intimacy of deep sharing, but I especially love listening to people. The part of the conversation where you listen. To hear people share what’s going on for them, to create space in that moment for a share is such a delight. To be educated by them, or persuaded or just to hear their story. We seem to live in an age where everyone talks at each other and there is little conversation. There just aren’t enough conversations in the world, so go start one, you never know they could soon be a friend. A genuine deep conversation is often what many of us need. Lovely days people.
