Being Seen.

Light rain and heavy cloud returns this campervan morning. The sky is white, the ground sodden, the air crisp and bright with a wee chill. A later start, the glory of advancing years and being self employed. There is a blackbird above me in the oak singing its heart out, the starlings have already moved on, a robin flits around me, blue tits hang momentarily on the branches, before shooting away. The roads are of course busier, to be expected really, but the droll hum of the motorway is non existent. The patter of rain increases to accompany the natural sounds that surround me. I came across a quote yesterday from the great photojournalist Ted Grant. He said :

“ When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and white, you photograph their souls! “

I stumbled across this quote as another friend sent me a picture of a fellow drummer who died a few days ago. The picture was in black and white and he was sat cross legged playing a large frame drum. The depth and power of the picture was not lost on me, maybe because of the emotions now attached to it, but also the synchronicity of the picture and the quote arriving separately, but at the same time. The power of black and white and synchronicity.

One of photographic greats Ansel Adams, whose black and white landscapes are just stunning wrote :

“ A photograph is usually looked at- seldom looked into.” The compelling natural of black and white. Lovely days people.

“ With all art expression, when something is seen, it is a vivid experience, sudden, compelling, and inevitable.” Ansel Adams.
